In Moodle 1.8 and later, there is a course import function that allows you to import pieces of any existing course on your account into a new course on the same account.
Please note: It is best practice to only use Import for importing parts from a source course to a new course rather than to move an entire course. Import is best used for moving parts of a course since it does not save the Summary information.
Additional things to know about the Import function:
- Make sure the new shell has the same number of topics/weeks as the existing course shell (otherwise the extra hidden weeks will all dump to block 0 - the top course section).
- During the import process, after the export from existing course script has run and before the import to current course script completes, if you see a continue hyperlink appear in the middle of the page below the Moodle frame, IGNORE IT. If you click it, you'll interrupt the import process and get blank data and garbage. This is the following Moodle bug: http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-15172
- Using IMPORT to migrate courses from semester to semester WILL NOT trigger a reset of activity open/close dates based upon the course start date because IMPORT does not trigger this action.
- The weekly/topic summary labels will not import to the new course. See http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-15154 for more information.
